Hylotelephium × mottramianum 'Herbstfreude'

stonecrop ( syn. Sedum Autumn Joy )

Product Image
A wonderful addition to pots or sun-drenched border edges, the flat-topped flowerheads of Hylotelephium × mottramianum 'Herbstfreude' can grow up to 20cm across, topping mounds of fleshy, grey-green foliage.

Rich in nectar and pollen, the flowers are highly sought after by pollinating insects, making them ideal for wildlife-friendly planting schemes, while also adding visual appeal with their structural, colourful and long-lasting heads.

Initially emerging from greenish white buds, the pale pink, star-shaped flowers quickly turn a richer raspberry-like hue, before finally taking on a russet-tan colouring as they fully mature.

Typically in bloom from late summer to mid-autumn, they're perfect for extending the season, and even as the last flowers fade, the decorative seedheads will remain interesting throughout autumn and winter.

How to care for Hylotelephium × mottramianum Herbstfreude:

Stonecrops grow best in full sun and well-drained soil, where their fleshy leaves won’t sit in excess moisture.

The flowerheads look great left during the winter to add shape and texture to your border. In February and March cut back the old flowerheads and apply a generous 5-7cm (2-3in) mulch of well-rotted garden compost or manure around the base of the plant.

Once established, sedums can have a tendency to flop leaving an open and unsightly centre, especially in fertile soil. One technique to help prevent this is the 'Chelsea chop'. During the last week of May (Chelsea Flower Show week), cut one in every three stems back to the ground. This will produce plants that are less lush and flower slightly later.
